Recommended Reading

What follows are my personal recommendations for readings that I have found helpful as a person-centred therapist.

To be congruent, genuine, and unconditional requires deeper personal development and growth. Skills can be learned and honed through practice, certainly, but the person must first develop the attitudes of empathy and unconditional regard. In this way, education to become a person-centered therapist is first and foremost about personal development and growth rather than learning a set of skills.

The Humanistic Psychology of Carl Rogers: Understanding the Person-Centered Approach Book by Stephen Joseph

Book that reflects on the real life meaning and implication of the theory, helps understand what it all means: “To become a therapist, one has to first become more congruent, more integrated. It starts with you and your journey of growth.” reflective: it shifts focus on yourself; you cannot expect the client to go somewhere you yourself have never been.

a blend of modalities from descending order: Psychodynamic / Object Relations/ Family Systems/ Attachment Theory/ Interpersonal / Relational approaches/ Person-Centred / Cognitive-Behavioural. While not purely Person-Centered remains helpful and highly recommended.

A Process Model by Gendlin

A wonderful book that creates space for the question “Is the body the unconscious” and helps awaken the idea that props our bodies know more than we thought.
